Refresher Course

More than an in-depth review, this workshop includes the things you asked for: clouds, running water, more people & glass. 

Kath Macaulay is back to offer those who have had the pleasure of joining one of her Pocket Sketching® workshops advanced techniques that will take their work to the next level. New are the use of pencil & permanent pen such as ballpoint (best of both worlds allows sketches in five minutes) for travel, journeling and people in their environment. Add working super-fast, under duress, from memory and a moving subject + your requests during class. It's all within your grasp but truly advanced.

All exercises will emphasize speed of execution to retain focal point & eliminate excessive detail. Frequent demonstrations and critiques after each exercise or at the end of a session. All critiques are supportive: if you're ready for a tougher critique, as I give myself, ask for it!

OBJECTIVE:
  • Be able to sketch or journal anywhere, under any circumstances, fearlessly, in 25 minutes or less
  • Know the tremendous advantages of your equipment
  • Be able to travel anywhere, by any means, and capture anything you think you see
  • Escape into meditation while sketching

WORKSHOP FORMAT

  • 5 Class sessions - 2 hours each (can be extended to complete discussion with students)
  • Spaced with 2 days between sessions to allow time for homework
  • Class recordings available for 2 weeks for review
  • Microphone opened 15 minutes early
    • Early arrivals
    • Group discussion
    • Questions for Instructor
  • Interactive evaluations throughout
  • Homework evaluation at beginning of each class
  • Each session will have a demonstration with students doing the exercise, then a review of that work and new material before the homework assignment.
  • Refresher classes go fast, are great fun, and have a lot of interaction and information.

LESSON PLAN

1  Review use of equipment and basic first exercise, color & focal point
        Emphasis on perspective of contrast, color and focal point

2  Picking focal point from from existing photo
        Emphasis on editing, focal point and your individual relationship to image

3  Running water, clouds, trees, still life
        Ways to do these problematic subjects

4  Sketching with dilute paint and use of darks
         From John Singer Sargent, a whole new way to work

5  Travel Journaling
        Materials to use and embellishments

After Day Two there may be changes depending on what students want.  You will be given choices from where you seek help or inspiration.
        Discussion will center on continuing to sketch for life.
