One of the most positive experiences I have ever had.  For four days not a negative, angry remark. You are too fabulous! Thank you.

A remarkably comprehensive workshop.  I loved every day and learned more watercolor techniques and tips than I'll ever use.  Amazing!

We went biking in Europe...and I did a whole lot of sketches in the 4"x6" little book. It is better than photos because I can remember so much more.

I tried a watercolor class before and I left thinking watercolor wasn't for me. Kath's workshop changed my mind. Really well organized, fun.  We learned a ton.

Workshop Overview

More than an in-depth review, this workshop includes the things you asked for:  clouds, running water, more people & glass.

Kath Macaulay is back to offer those who have had the pleasure of joining one of her Pocket Sketching® workshops advanced techniques that will take their work to the next level.

New are the use of pencil, dilute paint and permanent pen such as ballpoint (best of both worlds allows sketches in five minutes for travel), journaling & people in their environment.  Add working super-fast, under duress, from memory, a moving subject plus your requests during class.  It's all in your grasp - but truly advanced!

Lesson Plan

Day 1
Morning - Studio
  • Handling the paint set
  • Use of arm (not just fingers) to transfer 'chi' to drawing
  • Review use of pen, perspective lessons of contrast, color & focal point. Using these lessons to emphasize focal point.
  • Staying on focal point while using difficult subject
  • Finishing in 25 minutes or less
  • Escape into meditation while working, eliminating 'the pressure of the real world.
Afternoon - Studio & adjacent area
  • Wash drawing, monochromatic
  • Wash drawing with only point(s) of color
  • Wash drawing 'vignette' with emphasized focal point and undeveloped edges
  • Wash drawing maintaining whites as design element
  • Under duress, sketching from windows or equivalent, working up finished sketch in color later

Day 2
All Day in Studio
  • Journaling books, equipment comparisons
  • Journaling groups
  • Practice with greeting cards, sketchbook (including words)
  • John Singer Sargent methods, emphasizing use of wax, hiding mistakes  and pencil
  • Use of permanent pen and washes
  • Capturing a moving subject
  • Developing use of memory when drawing live subjects
  • Interiors
  • Sketching with  dilute  paint
  • Permanent pen

Day 3
Plein Aire (or if indoors)
  • Working under duress using car or building windows
  • Catching people, etc., in motion using substitutes & memory
  • People in their environment
  • Journaling, incorporating words with calligraphic pen
  • Using reproductions & photographs

All exercises will emphasize speed of execution to retain focal point,  eliminate excessive detail.  Frequent demonstrations and critiques after each exercise (or at end of afternoon when outdoors).
All critiques are supportive: if ready for a tougher critique, as I give myself, ask for it!

Objective

To be able to sketch or journal anywhere, under any circumstances, fearlessly in 25 minutes or less
Know the tremendous advantages of your equipment
Be able to travel anywhere, by any means,  and capture anything you think you see
Escape into meditation while  sketching
