We are leaving for Pinetop, Arizona on Sunday.  I’ve been packing supplies, books, etc. for three weeks of painting and sketching.  As you know, the sketching has almost no equjpment.  However, watercolor and acrylics involve bringing the kitchen sink.  I’ve just spent two days accumulating ‘stuff’ to take.  I should take a picture so you don’t feel you’re the only one over-planning.

Giclée (definition via AI)

A giclée (pronounced (zhee-clay) is an extremely high quality, archival-grade injet print used for fine art reproductions. The term comes from the French word gicler, which means 'to spray'.

Matted Giclée Sketches vs Originals

You might suspect that I have a large inventory of my sketches.  (Many oil paintings too.)  It is time to re-home them.  Susan can put up a sale gallery.  As you know, the Pilot ink is fugitive: the ink washes will fade but the watercolor is archival and will stay.  Giclee prints are totally archival.  Would you rather have the original sketch or the print, if you were buying one?  The giclee is the same size.  I have finally found a source of double 5 x 7 mats.  They should look good.  So I will ship each sketch matted but not framed.  If you were interested in buying either, what’s a reasonable price?  (Surveys are so much easier in person!!!)

Color & Contrast

Last Friday I took my weekly class outside for plein air.  My demonstration of the little house is boring.  They sketched.  They will bring those sketches to class tomorrow and I plan to tell them to look for problems in contrast, color and focal point (which they should know).  Here you have my demo. and the same sketch reworked for color and contrast.  Notice what a difference it makes!  When you have a bit of time and don’t want to start anything new, take out 4 or 5 ‘loser’ sketches, figure out what’s wrong and fix it.  I usually get two really good ones, two worse and one the same as before, but they were all losers before.  It’s great training on the basics.

Sketch It Again

The second pair of attached sketches is from my back yard. The first one is really busy. The second one I sloshed in the blue for the plumbago and then added the tree. If you have time, sketch the same place more than once. Each time you will do it differently and I find I capture the essence better on the second or third sketch. I won’t hang around to do four!

Membership Update

Due to Susan's move to Cottonwood, Arizona, the Membership portion of our website has been delayed. Why, you might ask? Internet speed...or lack thereof! Yesterday's download speed was 27 mbps with upload of 36 mbps. Susan was uploading 39 individual videos but the website conversion queue kept kicking them out due to the extremely slow speed. She tried meshing various modems, switched to Starlink and still couldn't get "up to speed." She finally bought 75' of cable, paid two delightfully helpful guys to crawl through the attic crawlspace (approximately 50' at over 100°) and run a cable directly to her computer. They were literally 'dripping wet' when they came down the ladders but are truly her Heroes!

]]><![CDATA[IT’S MAY!!!!!]]>Sat, 30 May 2026 22:04:07 GMThttps://www.pocketsketching.com/blog/its-mayThis is probably my favorite month in Tucson.  It was dry for a month.  Three nights ago we got heavy rain.  We have had marvelously low temperatures (like 85° as a daily high).  It’s sunny with clouds.  On Sunday we are predicted to go over 100° Then it may rock back and forth to the end of the month.  This is fun!  June will be solid heat, no clouds, totally boring and dreadfully hot.  Time to get out of town!
But for now we have gardens and Trader Joe’s has peonies for sale. Both disappear in June. Flowers that you grow in summer, we grow in winter and they thrive in May until it gets hot. Here’s my back yard. It’s an oasis for the time being

Weekly Classes

Now, about teaching weekly classes.  I’m not adapting.  People don’t show up, there’s no enthusiasm, no electricity, no excitement, no connectivity.  No anticipation. No sign of continuity. It’s probably my bad attitude, but I miss you guys!!!!  My workshops are so exciting!!! I get off on your learning, enthusiasm, amazement, joy…You can’t believe how rewarding it is to have you learning, excited, happy, for three solid days.  I really appreciate you, all your work, enthusiasm, dedication, and more!  Thanks for the blessing of getting to have each of you in class for workshops and in many cases, as friends after workshops.  I am so blessed!!!!!

PBS

With current government un-funding, many PBS stations are closed or limited.  A great way to get extra PBS Episodes is to go to PBS.org/pocketsketching - if your station is still available.  They have many Episodes there and you can revisit.  We have 39 Episodes for sale as downloads on the website: www.pocketsketching.com.  And Susan is putting the subscription videos together so you can subscribe in the near future and watch them live...day or night!  We currently have 3 Seasons available (39 30-minute videos) with Season 4 available soon (13 more). We’ll announce that soon.  I expect to do online workshops in the Fall.

Then we come back to Tucson, hopefully for part of the monsoon which generates magnificent thunderstorms and ends very early September (another hot and dry month). Do come visit here October through May.  We own the winter!

We will teach the Basic Workshop July 28,29,30 at Lakewood Center for the Arts in Lake Oswego, Oregon.  (I was their first ever visual srt class.)  Lake Oswego is a charming upscale community with shopping, restaurants on the lake, great vibes.

Golf, hiking and even summer skiing if you’re into helicopters. I lived there for two years when the population was merely 15,000. I rode my bike on mule deer trails. (The handlebars fit where antlers go.) ​

Newer Still...Tucson Classes

For the first time ever, I'm teaching classes for an organization that teaches classes, not workshops. Beginning this Friday, April 24 from 1-4 pm, I will be teaching every Friday at The Drawing Studio in Tucson, AZ through May 29th. If this works, we'll do another series in September so not-to-worry about the extremely short notice to register. It was announced yesterday and has 6 people already. I have to be prepared to teach classes on Friday. Wow!

​My friend Michelle has a new house to furnish and oil paintings her daughter painted when she was young.  They are on 1 inch canvas stapled to the support.  And they are big, as in 22 x 24 inches. She asked me to paint the exteriors to hide the staples, matching the colors Megan used years ago.  Tip:  Don’t do this!  Not only do you have to use very thick paint, you have to match the colors someone else chose.  I thought it would be an interesting exercise and perhaps lead me back into painting in oils.  Got out the Julian easel.  It has become amazingly heavy and cumbersome.  I used to haul it over a mile to paint on location.  I’m matching colors with paint that has become so thick, I’m using a nail to penetrate the tube to squish it out on a palette, using pliers. Then there’s clean-up.  Paint thinner and soap and water.  POCKET SKETCHING IS SO PORTABLE, SO NON-MESSY, SO JUST MATCHING OUR LIFESTYLE!  Oils look great on the wall, but P.S. is pure pleasure.

​For three weeks In June we will be in Pinetop, AZ renting a house with a Jacuzzi for which I have a use.  Covered with a plastic sheet, it becomes a very large workspace for water media and I don’t have to pick up for a month.  It’s in a separate room with good lighting, air conditioning and my music. In Tucson my ‘studio’ is outdoors and I’m forever getting stuff out and putting it away totally dependent on weather and lighting.

​​Once again, we’ve had a delightful workshop.  What a way to meet fun, happy people.  We went to the Arizona Inn for the plein air part on the third day and sketched at the glorious swimming pool.  The old Inn is timeless (almost 100 years old), has High Tea on Sundays open to anyone.  Being there is stepping back in time.  The new owners will keep it classic but add a few extras you’d expect, such as a spa and discounted packages

In July we have two workshops in Coupeville, Washington:  July 10 – 12 is The Basic Workshop and July 20-22 is The Refresher Workshop, (in the Refresher, the first day is review, then all new stuff.  It’s a great way to re-learn and get new technique plus have fun!).  Coupeville is on Whidbey Island across from Seattle.  The shuttle from the Seatttle  Airport runs every 20 minutes.  Lodging is walking-nearby.  This is a gem for vacations!

News

And the last news is by request.  Do you want to see one of our videos more than once to really ‘get it”?  Unlike regular PBS where you have to be ready at 9:30 on Tuesday morning every week, in June we will begin Pocket Sketching Memberships.  Susan, our techie, has found  a place that has a good user-friendly format.  Unlimited viewing for $20.00 a month with a six month membership to get all of PBS Seasons One and Two.  That means you can look at Season Two, Episode 4 ( whatever it is), any time you want (maybe midnight when you can’t sleep) for as many times as you want and back it up over and over to get exactly what you want to review.. When we did Online Workshops we found some people would go back over and over on the recordings to get what they wanted to learn.  I want this feature available.

We will follow this with Seasons Three and Four and a special package of ‘Yappas’.  In Greek, Yappas are something extra.  I have many technical gems that are sophisticated watercolor to share in a string of short we-make-them-here videos.  PBS Season Five is filmed, but not even totally edited yet.  Eventually it will also be available.  We are in planning stage in all of these and really look forward to your feedback.

I thought we were going to move to a retirement place this spring.  I told friends I’m enjoying my last Spring Garden.  Dale’s not ready to begin this ‘new life’, so it looks like another garden next year.  It has occurred to me that if I get rid of 2 ½% of junk a week, in 10 months only what’s wanted will remain.  Great idea.  We’ll see if it works.

Coming Workshops

The Basic workshop this coming weekend has 5 people.  That’s such a fun number!  The next one is March 20, 21 and 22 and there is room for 3 more people.  April and May we will probably do onlines.  June we will be in Pinetop where I get to spend the month painting.  July there are both a Basic and a Refresher workshop at the Pacific Northwest Art School, in Coupeville, Washington: (https://pacificnorthwestartschool.org/product-category/300-painting/ ) and a Basic Workshop at the Lake Oswego Performing Arts Center (next to Portland, Oregon) July 28, 29, 30. (https://lakewood-center.org/summer-adult-classes-2026/). 
A Refresher has one day of review and then all new ways to sketch.  My people didn’t like the word ‘advanced’, hence ‘refresher’.)  Because we will be on the road with everything in the car, we will plan a workshop in Oregon or California in August.  That’s likely the end of out-of-state workshops.  As much fun as the workshops are, hauling the stuff in and out of the car for months has become a bit old.  You might be getting the picture.  Speaking of pictures...

Giclees

​I have had giclees made of several favorite sketches.  Giclees are top quality prints made on acid free paper with archival ink.  I have mentioned before, the Pilot Razor Point pen (and all other water-soluble pens at this time) have what’s called ‘fugitive’ ink.  That means, it will fade in time.  My experience is, within 5 years.  The lines remain but the gorgeous washes disappear.  The opposite of fugitive is ‘archival’, which means it stays, basically far longer than a lifetime, as in hundreds of years.  The watercolors we use are archival.  I love the Razor Point pen because you learn watercolor technique easily as it is so very soluble.  As a tool, there is nothing that can beat it.

MATTED GICLEES

Ready to Frame

​The company that made the 5 x 7 double-cut mats I have given to my classes quit making them during Covid.  I have some left.  Last night I set up all of the 5 x 7 exterior measurement mats with giclee sketches.  They are ready to frame.  Those images are here.  There are three prints of each.  I had the giclees made for these mats and can’t find any more of the mats.  The price is $35.00 each, including shipping.  Incidentally I have several frames that fit these mats.  If interested, ask.  I do have the same images and more available blown up to 5 x 7 inches with double-cut mats with 8 x 10 exterior size available.  The price with shipping is $50.00.  All of these are great for learning or just enjoying. (Choice of mats deterrmined by artist (Kath) according to availability.)

Happy February

​I'd like to think the year starts here, not in January.  I bought myself a 'Maxine' calendar and I love January 21: "I am not crabby. The world is extremely irritating."  Today is: "My hair is the only thing I can count on gettiing thinner."

Recent Workshops and Our Learning

We just finished a small live workshop and a small online workshop.  I wanted to see if I still want to teach.  The small-sized groups gave me a chance to be more personal.  The live one went extremely well (I thought).  Here are two examples from absolutely novice artists.

Online Workshops

The online had glitches.  We bought a new internet service to iimprove connectivity...NOT!  Seems we forgot a little gadget that connects.  Many times service went out while I was teaching.  Also, Dale has a way of storing equipment...at random, in boxes.  We needed a microphone; we had 4-all in parts in different places, not assemblable.  We bought another.  We used my computer.  I have it back and I still can't find anything anywhere.  Things like the printer are not connected.  I had to fight to get my keyboard back (it fits the layout of my desk).  Our dining room is a mess.  No one was happy with the lighting.

You students have been amazingly patient.  You were jewels!  Dale salvaged the re-watch video by stitching it together.  Being a bit senior, we need to practice more and set up a totally dedicated area.  It's amazing what you can learn from experience!

I still very much believe in the on-lines.  With our format people learn extremely well and in their timeframe.  They have two weeks to review every lesson.  They learn from each other's artwork.  I love the system!  You stay home in comfort.  It's totally interactive.  We are truly impressed with how many 'hits' the recordings get.  This is learning at each person's pace.

Changes and Additions

Susan will be moving to Cottonwood, AZ. She's our techie who does the website, publishes blogs, helps with all sorts of things, and she's a very good friend. We'll miss having her here but she will continue her Pocket Sketching work from Cottonwood.  She has been wanting to set up a gallery for me to sell original sketches and oil paintings. We need to look at downsizing and I have an amazing amount of stuff to 're-home.' Sketches of Flowers will be first, then other sketches, watercolors and oil paintings of various sizes - some framed, some matted, some not - ALL SIGNED ORIGINALS. WATCH FOR AN ANNOUNCEMENT MID-MONTH.
We have two live workshops coming up in Coupeville, Washington at the Pacific Northwest Art School in July. This is on Whidbey Island close to Victoria, British Columbia, the Olympic National Park and Seattle. There's a shuttle from the Seattle airport. Great restaurants, great lodging and it's stunningly beautiful.

My current bedtime book is a biography on Clementine Churchill, Winston's wife. After he was fired from his impressive position at the Admiralty, he went into a lengthy depression. A friend handed him her child's paint set asking, "Are these toys any good for you?" Winston discovered he could escape into what he liked to call his "daubs" and he became transfixed. Later Winston would say that if it had not been for painting, he could not have withstood the strain of his career. He became a good painter but more important was the relaxing escape it gave him. We can all use this!

Back to the decision on teaching or not. I find the aspect of NOT depressing. Teaching you Pocket Sketching has been an enormous gift. I want someone to buy the business to carry it on in a much larger scale, but I derive far too much joy from your response/learning to totally back off. So, there will be a few live workshops and onlines for my mental health, if not yours.

Tip of the Month

​Don't dump it! This sketch is one of my favorites. Caroline (?) was a student in a workshop held in an art gallery in Pocatello, Idaho probably 13 or 14 years ago. She sketched from a painting in the room then threw the sketch in the waste basket, saying it was horrible. At least keep them for 3 days and look again when you've forgotten what you were trying to achieve. The sketch may truly be a loser or it may be amazingly good but didn't meet your expectations at the moment. I love this sketch and am glad to have her 'Reject.' (Somebody else may be very impressed by your 'bad attempt'... like me!)

It’s an interesting year end. Last week the dryer quit and we used insurance to get a replacement. That took a week to get a new dryer. Two days ago the main refrigerator quit and Dale went out and bought the replacement which arrived yesterday. I got up at 4:00 this morning and started filling it from the back-up frig. It’s always interesting to find out what’s in your frig!

Scammers

Adding to this, on about the 22nd I got scammed and the scammer had everything. We never got to the purpose of his call. I said I couldn’t talk with the commotion behind me. “Call back.” He never did. My banker said to cancel all credit cards…just before Christmas.  We had house guests and company coming.  Except for Chase, when the replacements arrived, the paperwork didn’t say which card corresponds to which account. You get to guess.

As I’m writing this, I’m on the phone on hold with Citibank to find out what card goes with what account. It’s 4:21 and I can start writing my blog while on wait. I bet I’m one of very few people who can find something to do while sitting ‘on hold’!

Sketching Changes

Have you noticed how your sketching changes? Sometimes great and sometimes yukky, sometimes strange and new? We’ve just had a lot of rain and no really cold weather here in Tucson. I have a favorite place which is wooded, no cactus. The cottonwood trees are finally turning yellow and the desert willows are orange. The grass is tall and brilliant green. Here are two sketches from a few days ago.

Of course, they are sketched with the water soluble Pilot Razor Point pen. This is what I think I saw. Now, for contrast and a fresh view, I want you to see another way of working.

​Permanent Pen Sketching

​Carolyn O’Bagy Davis Is a good friend who also sketches a lot. She uses a permanent pen, the Micron, does the sketch which dries as a line drawing, and then adds the color. The color is not diluted and it sparkles! She has agreed to let me show you her technique. Here are two of her sketches. I absolutely love her work and can’t do the same thing! We are all different. And we are each different on different days. What fun!

Carolyn primarily writes books. She wrote Willard J. Page,  Artist on the Southwest Road. Page traveled in a home-made van with his wife, Ethel, sketching “suitcase souvenir paintings” (3.5 x 3.5 inches) which he sold as a livelihood. Carolyn did amazing research and the book is fascinating and inspiring.

Workshop Enrollments - Openings Available

​B​asic Workshop HOME STUDIO Jan. 9, 10, 11. It is limited to 7 people and there are 2 spaces available. 
Basic Workshop ONLINE Jan. 16, 19, 22, 25 and 28.  Enrollment is limited to 13 and there are 7 spaces available. Each session is recorded and the recordings are available for two weeks so you don’t miss anything. I’m amazed at how well people learn in this format. We may continue these.
We may announce live workshops in March and April as both months are reliably wonderful weather. This is our 'Season' in Tucson!

​It’s been a year and we finished it with a flourish by booking rooms at The Arizona Inn in Tucson. This fabled garden inn was up for sale.  Everyone was concerned it might be trashed by new owners. (We are safe: new owners will be improving it.) With the help of Linda Fugate, a group of 11 sketchers got a great deal and stayed, relaxed and sketched for three days. I’ve always wanted to sketch the interior of the library.

We ended with dinner at Michelle and Duff’s home. I met her in one of my workshops years ago. Do you have any idea what a gift Pocket Sketching has been to me? I meet the most wonderful people!!! Here’s a sketch from her patio fireplace.

Holiday Travels

Dale and I were in Savannah, Georgia for Thanksgiving with family. You’d think I would have beautiful sketches of gorgeous old buildings. It didn’t work that way. Driving through town, watching traffic, went way too fast. However, sitting in airports does provide plenty of opportunities, as shown below.

Tip

People ask where I start on a sketch.  Anywhere! Make a mark on the paper and progress. I usually start with my focal point which is what caught my attention in the first place. If I don’t catch that, why bother?!!

The woman with the hat was started with the hat.  Notice that the hat is white so the lines are pulled away to make a darker background. The man with the red patches in his jeans sleeping behind his suitcase was started with the left corner red hole in his jeans. The sitting man was started with his brow and hair. Don't try to extrapolate what you can't see. Instead, include what is blocking your view (the suitcase).

Workshops

Workshops are back!  In January are two. January 9. 10, 11 is a Basic Workshop live in our home/studio. It is limited to 7 people and there are spaces available. 

Next we have a Basic Workshop ONLINE, Jan. 16, 19, 22, 25 and 28. Enrollment is limited to 13 people because the evaluations take personal time. Each session is recorded and the recordings are available for two weeks so you don’t miss anything. I’m amazed at how well people learn in this format. We may continue these.

We may announce live workshops in March and April as both months are reliably wonderful weather. This is our 'Season' in Tucson.

Season 5 Filming

A short reflection on the just-finished Season Five filmed in Grand Rapids.  The crew was excellent.  The weather and the locations were perfect,  It was such fun staying with Jan and Norm and having Eva and Tom help us on both ends of the travel.  Some of the sketches turned out marvelously.  Then there were others.  Not every sketch is a jewel.  In fact three were so unfortunate, Zack let me add to them after the shoot in hopes of improving them.  One got better, two stayed just as poor as before.  We all get some bombs!

The sketch with the stream had one good part.  By darkening the rocks in front and adding dark branches above the good part, you are forced to see it.  The Japanese pond just didn’t do well before or after!  Often, when you ‘fix em’, it’s obvious what’s wrong (color, contrast or focal point), and you get a great result.  Sometimes nothing works.  I get these too.  I can say I wish they weren’t part of a public TV program, but that’s reality.  Perhaps that’s part of the excitement of plein air.

REMINDER

Do you remember that I taught you to neither talk nor listen to your language while sketching?  I'm talking through every sketch.  You automatically flip into the left side of your brain (the logic language side) and away from the meditative creative side.  Here you see some of the results.

Tip

Here’s your TIP for this blog.  Jan asked how to get practice for sketching people.  One way is to practice on your own feet.  They’re always there, a perfect distance from your hands.  You can turn them, dress them, etc.  They are anatomy.  Do them in proportion and out of proportion.  Add background.  Give it a go!

It started with flying to Grand Rapids from Mesa, Arizona. We stayed with good friends, Eva and Joe. We didn’t know it, but he ordered wheelchairs for us. New experience and that put us on the plane first. I got to sketch as the other passengers boarded the ramp. This is surprisingly fun as they waited in line long enough to ‘grab’ a sketch. Next sketch was of a passenger on head phones. Headphone and computer people really hold still. These make very good models. That’s my tip for this blog. When bored, find the people who hold still long enough for you to practice.

Grand Rapids, Michigan

In Grand Rapids we stayed with Jan and Norm for a few days before filming. She’s the person who had me go to WGVU to film Pocket Sketching in the first place. Because I felt very rusty and the entire Season Five was to be filmed plein air, I sketched in their yard. Norm is a gardener. This was all safe and delightful. The frog’s book is ‘Good Night Moon’.  We chose his yard for the first three episodes when we filmed. ​

Filming Day 2

The second day we filmed in the Frederick Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park where we were joined by our “Mystery Donor” for a day of live shooting. She is delightful and I think she really enjoyed the experience of filming. Sketching plein air does not necessarily go as planned. With pressure and an exact time frame of 26 minutes, the sketches leave a bit to be desired. However, I talk all the way through with all the decisions. One particular location involved looking through a fence to get the sketch with a live person sitting on the fence providing my shade. Not the best sketch. I will love to hear your reactions when you see Season Five. ​

Filming Days 3 & 4

The next day was at the lovely Franciscan Life Process Center in the country near Lowell, Michigan. It is a perfect, meditative retreat location. The last day was on the Allendale campus of GVSU. The crew was wonderful. Filming was exhausting. We had fun with friends. And on the flight home we both caught Covid. And after that was over, I taught a Teacher’s course here in Tucson for five days. I am ready for a break! ​

Upcoming Events

As they say in the theater business, November and December will be ‘dark’.  I plan a live Basic Workshop here in our ‘home studio’ January 9, 10 and 11 and an Online Workshop January 16, 19, 22, 25 and 28.  The online sessions are each 1 ½ hours long.  They are limited in enrollment to 12 people.  They are interactive and recorded with the recordings available for review for two weeks for each class.  I have been very impressed with how well people learn from this format. In both cases, contact me to enroll.

Another Season, Another Show

I stole that from Cole Porter who wrote so much music I love. One of his songs is named "Experiment" and I often remind you so you'll sketch away from limitations.

Speaking of which, is there anything you would like me to include in this coming PBS Season? We leave for Grand Rapids, Michigan September 29th to set up filming locations and we will have internet. Email me your interests for the plein air season.

If you are in the Grand Rapids area and want to see some actual filming, that may be a possibility.
Amusing fact: I'm used to be totally obscure when I'm sketching for myself. Can't do that with a camera crew hovering. So, do I take my 'obscure-you'll-never-see-me' wardrobe or the fun flashy clothes I've worn on the studio set? And what about rain?

Tip for This Session

If your first sketch is disappointing, do two (2) more of the same thing. I must practice to be ready for Grand Rapids. Dale watches football on TV. He gets to be the model. Here are the first sketch and the third sketch. STAY WITH IT!!!

Upcoming Events

THE TEACHERS WORKSHOP
There are still two openings. The dates are October 26 (half-day) through the 31st (full days) at my home studio in Tucson. This workshop is limited to five (5) people. It includes everything I know about teaching and doing Pocket Sketching. If you have considered the fun of teaching Pocket Sketching in your town (or on cruises, retreats, resorts or as a fundraiser for your favorite not-for-profit, this is your chance to have a lot of fun, purpose and even an income.

THE BASIC WORKSHOP November 7-9 is filled. I will probably do a few over the winter here in Tucson, including the Basic and the Refresher (live) and some onlines through Zoom. Nothing is scheduled yet. ​
​Lisa Bernhart has asked me to come back to Coupeville next summer to teach at the Pacific Northwest Art Center. The workshop we did last summer was so rewarding emotionally that we will continue with a few more. You can't believe how much fun it is to have people find they can sketch totally for pleasure anywhere they choose! And what delightful people take these workshops!!! We are now scheduled for both the Basic and Refresher workshops in July 2026.

​Our Fall doesn’t begin until October which is why all things social begin sometime in October.  Today and yesterday have been below 100 degrees after weeks well above 100.  We do what most of you do:  stay indoors.
I bought a few roses and baby’s breath. and sketched them.  Here are two of the sketches and your TIP:    The more exciting sketch has a white line of wax straight up the middle, dividing the picture in half.  Very bad design.  It’s high contrast and you can’t hide it, remove it, paint over it.  It’s the first thing you see because of the contrast.  I can enhance the weak sketch. 

Foodie

​I’m a foodie and a sketcher.  The past July trip included one of my favorite restaurants, Local Ocean in Newport, OR.  This photo is of their salmon on fruit with Marionberry sauce.  I’ve found a Marionberry spread and plan to make this one for dinner Friday for a foodie friend and Dale.  This time I may take time to sketch it.  Food is really fun to sketch.  (It’s also indoors with cooling.)

PBS Season 5

​And last, Season Five of Pocket Sketching.  I’m scared because I’ve never sketched in public places with a camera crew!  Sort of like you when you first go out to sketch in public.  I’m used to being totally, happily invisible when sketching plein air.  The crew will attract attention.   As for the funding, we are currently at $6440 with only $3560 to go, thanks  to your help and the very generous  anonymous donor who donated $20,000 in a matching grant, making your tax deductible gifts three times bigger.

Extra Tip

​This sketch was done in Margie Beckett’s back yard on our July trip.  It’s mostly green.  Look what happens when you add the complimentary color and a tiny bit more color at the focal point.  Focal point is that important!

PBS Pocket Sketching Show
Season Five for PBS is alive and well, thanks to the anonymous donor and you.  The dates are October 6 through 10 for filming.  Your donations to make this possible are coming in.  They are matched 3:1 so 100 becomes $300.  So far WGVU has received $6440.00! We have left the North end of the trip to head back to Tucson.  The Basic Workshop at the Pacific Northwest Art School in Coupeville was a success!  This was a big question: after time off, basically a sabbatical, could we still deliver a good experience?  (Might add we're not kids anymore.)  The plan was, if this workshop 'worked' we could consider doing others.  I'm planning a Basic Workshop late in October: dates to be announced after I contact the people who have already asked.

Here are two sketches from our 'plein air' morning in Coupeville.

Monthly Tip
On the way to Coupeville we stopped on the Oregon coast for some practice sketching, as I had been painting in watercolor and acrylics and was a tad stale.  THIS IS YOUR TIP FOR AUGUST.

​Here are Sketch 1 and Sketch 6 of the same subject. You may have quit for a while, but if you will just practice, you’ll be right back where you left off. It’s truly fun to see very fast improvement because you have already learned once and re-learning is easy!

Most amusing of the trip was Mister T's Family Cafe in Mt. Vernon, WA where we had the 'Inmate Special.'  A local jail inmate broke through the ceiling of the jail and announced he wouldn't come down until they brought him 'biscuits and gravy' from Mister T's.  A cop ran into the restaurant and demanded the order, took it to the escaped prisoner and he came down to eat it and be re-jailed.  It is really good!

​We stopped at the Devil's Churn on the Oregon coast.  I have tried to sketch it before.  I love this sketch as it shows movement.  And I still haven't captured this phenomenal place.  Hope to visit it on the way back to Tucson.

Fantastic News!

​I had planned to end PBS shows, not doing Season Five. An anonymous donor has promised $20,000 to WGVU as matching money toward the $30,000 needed to finance the Season (13 Episodes). Because some wonderful person has huge faith in us, I plan to film Season Five in October. Any donation will be tripled, as in $100 becomes $300 until they have the $30,000. This Season will be filmed ‘on location’ as in plein air. I have always wanted to film on location where you typically sketch. WGVU has agreed.

​You’ve heard me say this and here’s an example.  (‘This has three tips’).  
​Peonies are in season and they’re ephemeral.  They open quickly, progress through wilting and dying.  This is perfect to get you going to grab a sketch before they’re gone.   This peony is from a batch of peonies a few days ago.  ​
​Below there are three sketches showing the progress of today’s sketch so you can see how I went at it.  (If you like this approach, let me know, and I’ll photograph progression in the future.)
​First, the drawing, using a very heavy line on the outside to have a source of grey to pull away.  Add veridian green as the green-grey will make the rose color pop out.  Then do the background, including some leaves.  Then start the flower with thin washes of color (quinacridone red or alizarin with touches of cerulean blue).  I don’t like the result.  If I had time, I would do this over probably two more times to see if I can get it better.  The concept is good, the result makes me appreciate the one I did two days ago.
​

Time

​ My lack of time is because we are going on a real vacation trip to Pinetop, Arizona (no teaching), and I plan to paint there so have to load tons of painting stuff (along with cooking stuff and clothing stuff which will wait to the end).  I’m actually taking oils, acrylics, gouache and watercolors plus pocket sketching poo.  What will get used?  We’ll see!
​

Fugitive

​Remember I’ve mentioned the Pilot Razor Point pen is fugitive?  I have found no better pen to teach wash drawing, the precursor to watercolor.  It’s invaluable!  However, I want you to be aware.  For 7 years I have had a group of sketches framed in our dining area, which walls get sun every afternoon and light all day.  There also is a sketch of an Airedale terrier framed in an always dark hallway for the same amount of time.  Here they are for comparison with the scanned copies I made when they were new. 
​What am I telling you?  Scan the good ones so you can always make copies.  Or keep the original in a file and frame a good copy.  Once scanned, you will never lose the intensity.  Note the watercolor doesn’t fade.  It probably fades in 100 years or so.  But your lovely washes?  When you get a good sketch, put it in your computer before you put it on the wall.

​We are going to and showing at Sketcherfest in Edmonds, Washington July 19 and 20. This is an event for and by sketchers put together by Gabi Campanario, the founder of Urban Sketchers which is a world-wide sketching movement.  Edmonds is north of Seattle, on the waterfront, home also to Rick Steves of travel fame.  Wonderful scenery, hiking, fishing, sketching, seafood and wine.  Here’s the link for the event.   If you go, I can suggest many places to see, as I have been up there many early summers.

Also, we have a workshop at the Pacific Northwest Art Center in Coupeville, WA on Whidbey Island. I have taught there for years.  It is the only distant workshop I have planned.  Again, we love this area and can suggest many places for food, lodging, sightseeing, hiking, sauntering, etc.

Workshops

After my long sabbatical, I’m back in the saddle again!  We have two Basic Workshops scheduled and one event. The first workshop will be in Showlow, Arizona June 9, 10, 11. Why Showlow? For the first time ever we’ve rented a house for a month to escape the June heat in Tucson. Showlow is at 6400 ft and cool in the summer. How better to meet wonderful local people than an art workshop? Delightful people take art workshops! I’m very rusty, so it’s priced accordingly. Showlow Workshop

Coupeville Workshop

Great News!

I said I would film Season Five for PBS if we can film it on location (plein air), as it’s perfect for anywhere you go. WGVU has agreed. Now, I have a question for you: WGVU is located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, a location like where many of you live. I’m in Tucson, which is desert. Would you rather have it filmed in Tucson or in Grand Rapids? Which would help you learn more? We can find gorgeous places in either locale. Any preference? Yes, you can influence where we film: let me know if you have a preference.

Tip

If you paint, have you tried painting from your pocket sketch? I’m re-learning oil painting as I have tons of equipment I need to either use or give away. This week I have done 6 oils from one pocket sketch. The oils are getting good. You can get tons from one pocket sketch! Especially if you did the sketch recently while it jogs your memory. This sketch is at least 5 years old. I have few memories and look what can be done! Give it a go!

Retreats

A year ago I held my first Pocket Sketching Retreat.  I’d never been to a retreat, much less hosted one.  I’d read about them.  That was as close as I’d been.  A friend is a travel agent and she did the work of making reservations…for everything.  The Arizona Inn here in Tucson was our base.  It was marvelously fun! So several of the group decided to do a repeat, this time at Tubac, a cute, artsy village south of Tucson. 

​Last week we stayed at the Tubac Golf Resort and visited Tubac, the village, with a good dose of sketching, lots of joyous chatting and some shopping.  The easiest way to show it, is to include sketches.  There were nine of us and the conclusion is that they all want to do it again, next time near San Luis Obispo in California.  I am amazed:  this is fun!!!  Will this be the new form of Pocket Sketching?

Oil Painting

I’ve been trying to re-learn oil painting.  It is possible to forget a lot!  Bit by bit some technique is coming back.  I understand you when you say you’ve put down art for years and are re-learning.  I think we have an advantage by having known before.  At least we know we could do it in the past.

With oil painting I am amazed at how much equipment is involved compared to the ‘grab it and go’ of Pocket Sketching.  Like many of you, I have tons of equipment and have said for years all I want is to be free to use all this stuff.  ‘Someday’ is now.  I have no workshops booked.  Maybe it’s time to make a huge donation of oil, watercolor, and acrylic supplies, then just go sketching.   Here are two oils I rather like.

Teaching

​Court is still out as to the future of teaching Pocket Sketching.  I really miss your enthusiasm and joy in learning.  Dale and I are getting ancient and there are so many possibilities!  Stay tuned for my “trout story” in the next blog.  It set up my life.

You have no idea how much I hate soliciting gifts from companies. After all your donations and purchases of ‘Fix’Em’ came in, I thought I still owed between $8000 and $10,000 to get Season Four of Pocket Sketching at PBS out. I had paid for a local studio to film two Episodes here so there would be some plein air included. Then there was money left over from a previous season.

When Phil at WGVU checked with the station's accountant, it was done.  Then NETA approved.  IT HAS BEEN SENT to every station in the US!!!  SEASON 4 IS OUT and AVAILABLE IN YOUR TOWN.  Bug your local station to see it and keep sketching.

Workshops

In Tucson we have just finished a live workshop with a small enrollment. Much less stress and really fun. We are currently teaching two Basic Workshops online. We’ve forgotten a lot about the technical end so we get to re-learn. The students are delightedly learning and happy.

February 13, 16, 19, 22, 25 I have scheduled a morning and an afternoon Refresher Workshop online. This may well be the last of our online workshops. It’s amazing to me how well people learn in an online. When people do the homework, it’s obvious they caught the lesson. It also helps that the recording is available for two weeks.  Come join us for a review.
      
February 28, March 1 and 2 is a live Refresher Workshop in our home here in Tucson. The weather should be excellent. The nearby Sheraton gives us a special rate. There’s room to enroll. This workshop has a day of review and two days of all new stuff. It’s a great opportunity to get back sketching in case you haven’t had time, plus have fun in a group.

​Business Opportunity

We are using these workshops to decide if we will keep teaching or not. We’ve had a wonderful ‘run’, met fabulous people, been to some great places, but we’re aging out. If you know someone who would like an exciting business with a huge upside, recommend them to us. 

This would be a business person, not necessarily an artist. This person would not teach, but hire staff teachers, who I could train. Those teachers teach teachers who do workshops in their local towns. This is the Bob Ross model. Bob made $11.4 million in his short time as a business, according to Wikipedia. That’s not chump change. We’ve come a long way. I do not want Pocket Sketching® to disappear!

​You can order 4 x 6 reproductions of my sketches for $3.00 each. We will raise the price in the future, but I wanted it to be low so our supporters could order good model sketches inexpensively.  I planned to recommend this system to other artists. It has been a tremendous amount of work for Susan, our webmaster and so far, an expense. When the annual contract runs out this coming summer, we will decide whether to keep it going and whether to recommend it or not. Meanwhile, you might want to check out the reproductions to have as an example.

​Monthly Tip

​Here's the tip: I have been feeling a lot of stress. With guests I visited our Botanical Garden and stopped to sketch. Instant stress lowering. As you enter into the meditative state of immersion, stress evaporates. Try it, you’ll be amazed. The sketch can be of any quality, the stress relief works. The attached sketches are from our Tucson Botanical Garden at earlier times (and better quality.)

The Buttes - Phoenix, Arizona

​We got to spend a bit of Christmas with the grandkids in Phoenix at 'The Buttes', a wonderful resort known for swimming pools and hot tubs. Here's my sketch of the tall wall in one of the dining areas.

Sabbatical

Where has the sabbatical gone?  Before I became 100% involved with Pocket Sketching, I painted in oil and watercolor, had several big shows and competed nationally. The inventory grew. In about 2010 I switched into Pocket Sketching and teaching. The inventory and supplies have been waiting. Some of you understand, as you also have a huge supply of art stuff. So, I have been relearning oil painting and hope to give painting in oil and watercolor another ‘go’ as the Brits say.  As my late brother would say, “We’ll see.”

Monthly Tip

Here’s a very important tip. When you have a sketch you absolutely love, consider keeping the original where it is not exposed to light. Scan it into your computer or take a photo for reproduction. The ink line is fugitive. That means if it is exposed to light on the wall it will fade…over time a lot! There is no black water-soluble pen yet that is archival. India ink is archival but very hard to work with. You’ll see my reaction in Season Four of Pocket Sketching

Season of your life!
Tucson is short on Christmas decorations.  So I joined Michelle, a dear friend, who has decorated for a party.  The deer was on her mantle.  Sketch material may come from very small places.  Watch for little inspirations.  (And that’s my tip this time.  It works for me.)

Our current travels are sparse.  We went to Savannah, Georgia for Thanksgiving as my son flies from there (a pilot). The granddaughters and a delightful friend were all visiting.  A wonderful family time.! Old Savannah is gorgeous with architecture, moss-covered huge live oaks, small parks with statues or fountains everywhere.  It’s a major commercial ocean port so huge ships pass by on the waterfront of the Savannah River.  The J.W. Marriott has a Smithsonian-quality mineral and fossil display including a full-sized brontosaurus hung below the ceiling for most of the distance of the immense lobby.  I was too awestruck to even take pictures!  Don’t miss it if you go there.
I’ve been on sabbatical with the intent of oil painting as I have a huge stash of unused supplies and the weather has been good to work outdoors (no studio).  A whopping two paintings are finished.  And I miss students.  Here’s the plan:
  • Basic live workshop in January. 
  • Basic online spanning February and March
  • Refresher online in February
  • Refresher live in Feb-March.   
If these classes work well, I may do them again. Tony Couch is still teaching. I used to say I'd teach as long as he does. He's 94. I gave that up as bad judgment! Visit SCHEDULE for details.
