DESCRIPTION
Pocket sketching.  Using a very small format (4”x 6”) and very inexpensive materials, anyone can learn to create watercolor sketches of excellent quality, anywhere.  Unleash your creativity and awareness.  FOR TRAVEL THIS IS A PERFECT WAY TO ADD FAR MORE PLEASURE BY INTERACTING WITH THE LOCALE.  It is ideal for journaling and pochads.  Sketches take about 25 minutes and can be done in any location, from ship cruises to standing in line.  The results are delightful.  No previous experience is needed. Experience will be gained in landscape, still life and people sketching.

MATERIALS (pricing may vary:  these are current retail prices in my area)
Sketch pad, Strathmore, ‘Drawing’, 4”x 6”    $2.60
Pen, Pilot fine point, black ink  (This is the old grey pen)    $1.60
Water container with tight lid    free
TOTAL COST WITHOUT COLOR        $4.20

Miniature, good quality paint set, Winsor & Newton Cotman, Field Sketching, (14 half pan).      $32.00   (Can be omitted if only black and white sketches are wanted)
TOTAL COST WITH COLOR   $36.20 (good brush comes in paint set)

FORMAT
The class can be taught anywhere there is good light.   Group size should be small (ideal 10:  6 to 12 people is acceptable).  For classroom, tables and chairs are needed.  Each person needs as much room as would be required for a meal.  Instructor needs a table, card table size or larger. Exercises can be done standing or sitting ‘on location’.  Days one and two are primarily indoors, Day 3 is outdoors in a tourist location, or indoors if weather is bad.  This is for learning you can do it on your own with excellent results.  Critiques are done after every exercise.  Learning is achieved from making ‘mistakes’.

LENGTH OF WORKSHOP
Three full days, 10:00AM to 4:00 PM is customary.  Five full days or partial days allow much more opportunity to use the technique “on location”.  Three to six half days can be done in conjunction with an exercise program or using Julia Cameron’s book, The Artists’ Way.

HANDS ON DEMONSTRATION
A hands-on overview can be done in 1 ½ to 2 ½ hours with students getting to do both black and white and color sketches. There are two demonstrations (one black and white, one color), for which instructor and students need table space.  The demonstration includes critique sessions.

DRESS
Anything:  there’s no way to make a mess.
